Because I haven’t seen a more haunted place in almost 20 years of paranormal experience.
The Custom House has stood watching over the harbour since the 1860’s. An impressive building like this doesn’t just generate ghosts from history. Here they come from use. It was only a Custom House for 20 years. Then many organizations and businesses moved through it.
Many different people, countless events of joy, happiness and tragedy. So much energy that something ghostly would occur on almost every tour and hunt we ran.
They Tried to Lock Me Out
The energy was stirred up on one particular night. In 2015, one evening I came in alone to setup for a sold out hunt night.
In no way am I psychic, nor do I ever claim to feel energy. That night was different. I stepped into the building. Felt how the air was heavy and my calm mood immediately changed to anxiety.
Bringing down chairs from the attic into the gallery. I setup the front table with hunting tools and saw something was missing. Realized I left a couple of bags in the backseat of my car.
When walking out the front door I turned the deadbolt lock. To prop open the door, so the lock bar doesn’t catch and lock me out.
Walked to the driveway, got the bags and headed back. Nothing happened to change my mood, no energy reached out, no sign something ghostly was about to happen… just a click.
I looked up to see the door close. At first it didn’t make sense. You know, how the mind rationalizes an experience. I thought “maybe someone’s in the building” or “the deadbolt fell off”. Neither were true.
The only explanation, the deadbolt was turned by someone (or something) inside the empty building. Definitely not the only experience inside this very haunted place.
And a personal note | The WAHC (Workers Arts & Heritage Centre) have successfully maintained this historic wonder since the 1990’s. Their work is priceless genius and should be supported! Please visit their website to take part in non-ghost events at http://wahc-museum.ca/
At this time they chose not to have Ghost Walks in the building. My hope is that will one day change and we can return to ghost business as usual.
