Personal Experience in the Screaming Tunnel

For over 100 years the legendary Screaming Tunnel in Niagara-on-the-Lake has stood hidden at the tip of the Niagara Escarpment. Legend and ghost stories giving the location it’s infamy.

I knew the legends going into this professional visit. Part of a bus trip I helped coordinator over a decade ago. Yet I remember like it was yesterday. Not cause of the spooky excitement. Instead, due to sheer disappointment.

Blue Ghost Tunnel – King of the Niagara Spooky Tunnels

Ghost Guide Daniel – – Old and abandoned, the Welland Canal’s Lock 18 passes above a notorious Niagara haunt.  Historically called the Merritton Train Tunnel, the 140 year old structure now known as the “Blue Ghost Tunnel”.

Completed in 1876.  Converted to occasional use in 1887.  Closed in 1915.  How did something so lightly used gain such a reputation?
