Hamilton Place Theatre (now FirstOntario Concert Hall) isn’t old. But it’s the kind of building where the air holds energy. For decades, staff and performers talk about strange encounters. As if it absorbed every emotion felt inside it.
Joy, heartbreak, fear, anticipation… over fifty years left a mark.
And beneath the stage are tunnels connecting the complex. And one lost visitor discovered just how real that energy can be.
Her encounter with a mysterious orb. A heroic and silent guide in the dark. Remains one of Hamilton Concert Hall’s most unforgettable ghost stories.

A Ghost of Hamilton Concert Hall (Theatre)
Hamilton Concert Hall may not be the oldest theatre in Hamilton’s history, but it carries energy like a historic building. Creeping out staff, performers, and guests for decades.
To understand why FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) is haunted. You’ll need to know why theatres are just different in the world of the paranormal.
A Modern Theatre
Hamilton Concert Hall opened in 1973 as part of an ambitious (the right city for it) cultural complex.

The idea was bold … four major buildings connected together. This included…
- Theatre
- Convention centre
- Art gallery
- … and Hamilton’s Science Centre
What Science Centre may you ask? None! The funding ran out before it was built. Leaving the noticeable gap along Main Street that was replaced by a tree! And the Art Gallery’s Sculpture Yard.
Inside Hamilton Concert Hall was a state‑of‑the‑art setup for the 70s. 2,000 seats, hundreds of speakers, and advanced acoustics. Designed so every audience member got the same performance.
It quickly became, and remains, the largest theatre in Hamilton.
But that raises a question. How does a building from the 1970s end up so haunted?
Why Theatres Hold Energy
Hauntings aren’t always tied to age.
Like haunted houses. With generations of families living in a shell of wood. Energy from events. Happy times, tragedy and sadness. Leave an impression.

That’s why the worst haunted houses are sometimes abandoned. Human energy is left behind. Unbalanced towards negative. Lingering thick within those walls and not feeling right … not like home.
And other times it’s tied to emotional energy. Live theatres are emotional engines.
Places where thousands of people gather to feel something. Joy, heartbreak, fear, laughter, anticipation.
Hamilton Concert Hall had over fifty years of intense energy build up. And unlike movie theatres, which come and go … live theatres hold onto their energy.
This place is no exception.
Basement Encounter
The ghost story begins underground.
Beneath Hamilton Concert Hall lies a sprawling network of hallways connecting the theatre to the Convention Centre and Art Gallery.
These tunnels were designed to move props, artwork and equipment without needing to travel between buildings, out in the elements on busy King and Main Streets.
For staff, the basement is practical. For anyone unfamiliar, it’s a confusing maze. And one night, a young lady found herself lost.
Stage Manager’s Friend was Bored
Years ago, a stage manager was preparing the Main Stage for an upcoming show.

He had brought a friend along. Harmless enough, especially at night when the building was quiet.
While he worked onstage, placing marks and props. His friend sat alone in the audience. She got bored. Then left to wander the building.
A hallway led her deeper, down into a lower level. Walking through the halls. And within minutes she was lost.
Imagine it … silent corridors, identical turns, no cell signal. No voices or sense of direction. Just the hum of halogen bulbs over your head and the silence of being completely alone.
She walked for about an hour. Every hallway looked the same. Eventually, exhausted and scared, she sank to the floor and cried.
That’s when the energy around her changed. She said, “… it felt heavy”.

A Heroic Orb
She felt it before she saw it. Like magnetism in the air.
When she looked up, a white glow hovered at the end of the hallway. Soft, steady, and strangely comforting.
Her first though, “…it’s a flashlight! Held by someone searching for her”. She even jumped up and yelled, “I’m over here!”
But the light didn’t move. Something inside her, maybe instinct, urged her to walk toward it.
And as she got closer, the glow faded away.
Confused, she turned… and saw it again, now framing the wall at the end of that hallway. Once, twice. She followed. Again it faded. Again it reappeared.
Until she turned to see the light framing a door.
Escaping the Basement
Eventually, the glow settled on a closed metal door. She ran down the hall as the light vanished.
She pulled open the door and stepped back into Hamilton Concert Hall. Running back to the main stage to see her frantic friend. So happy to see she was okay.
To this day, she believes the glow was a heroic guide. A helpful energy that guided her out of the maze.
