Top 3 Connecticut Ghost Stories

The Conjuring: Last Rites is set to hit theaters in September 2025. The fourth film in the franchise depicting the real life investigations of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren of the Constitution State.

Connecticut is regarded as one of the most haunted states in America given its deep history, haunted locations, and petrifying legends.

Remember the legend of Dudleytown? An abandoned ghost town in Cornwall? Not only was the town plagued by eerie and tragic events, people apparently went insane, vanished, or died under mysterious circumstances.

The story is just one of the many terrifying Connecticut ghost stories in Connecticut that will make you jump out of your skin.

Here are some of the most bizarre stories in the The Nutmeg State.

Snedeker House

Connecticut is blessed with a diverse topography featuring river valleys, coastal plains and forested highlands.  In addition to its amazing natural beauty, the state has a rich history and exciting culture attracting many visitors.

For those looking for unique experiences, the area also features spooky haunting sites from ghostly towns and haunted woods to creepy dolls and eerie homes.

The Snedeker House in Southington is an example of a sinister home. Imagine moving into a house that was once a funeral home.

The Snedeker family did that – relocating in the 1980s into a house that was plagued with paranormal activity.

Shadow figures, sudden temperature drops, and violent incidents marred their stay at their new abode.

The creepiest part? Members of the family stated they saw coffins in the basement moving on their own while the mother claimed she was physically assaulted by a ghost.

Even the son alleged he was possessed by a demonic force.

The events were so disturbing that the house inspired the 2009 horror movie, ‘The Haunting in Connecticut.’

Curse of Dudleytown

According to anecdotes, the Dudley family who settled in the 1940s in Cornwall, Connecticut was cursed because their ancestor, Edmund Dudley, was beheaded for treason in England.

The curse followed his descendants across the Atlantic to America bringing with it madness, misfortune, and death. Local rumors spread about the mysterious disappearances of early settlers as well as a wave of suicides and violent deaths.

Also, lightning struck multiple members of the Dudley family while others went insane.

Visitors to the area including paranormal investigators reported hearing whispers and ghostly voices in the woods. Furthermore, shadowy figures were sighted moving between trees and electronic devices apparently malfunctioned when in the area.

In fact, Dudleytown is located in the valley of the Dark Entry Forest, so named because of the shadows caused by the surrounding mountains. Due to severe crop failures, diseases, and unexplained tragedies, the remaining settlers abandoned the town in the 1800s.

Ed and Lorraine believed the area was teeming with demonic energy.

Today, Dudleytown is a private property and no one can enter the premises.

Annabelle

Haunted Doll of Monroe

Nursing student Donna, was gifted a Raggedy Ann doll by her mother.

She kept the doll in her apartment that she shared with her roommate Angie.

In the beginning, everything seemed normal, but afterwards both of them began noticing strange things happening around the doll.

The doll seemed to be moving on its own changing positions in the apartment. Donna and Angie also found bizarre handwritten notes on the apartment walls that say, ‘Help me.’

Both felt a persistent sense of dread whenever they were around the doll, as though someone was watching them.

Due to the intensity of the disturbances, Donna asked for help from a psychic medium, who claimed to have made contact with the spirit of a young girl called, Annabelle Higgins.

She died on the land where the apartment complex now stood.

Accordingly, her spirit had attached itself to the doll, but it was not a benevolent spirit at all. The demonic doll was linked to brutal paranormal activity.

Lou, one of Donna’s friends reportedly woke up, with violent scratches and injuries. When the violent encounters escalated, Donna reached out to the Warrens for help.

The couple said that the doll was trying to possess the roommates and because of this, they removed Annabelle from the apartment.

The Warren’s put the doll in their Occult Museum in Monroe where it is locked up in a glass case.

The doll’s haunted reputation lives on inspiring a number of films including The Conjuring and Annabelle.

Today, the museum is no longer open to the public. Originally shut for zoning issues. But now mostly due to the passing of Ed in 2006 and Lorraine in 2019.

Connecticut ghost stories are amazing. The State has plenty of spooky stories and haunted sites for those into the paranormal. If you’re too spooked to visit these places, the state is also replete with many interesting historic and cultural points of interest.
