The Watcher | Niagara-on-the-Lake Town Ghost

The Watcher is a fascinating and eerie local legend in Canada’s Most Haunted Town, Niagara-on-the-Lake.  A picturesque place known for historic charm and folklore.

But this legend is different.  Talks about a mysterious blue orb.  Seen over the generations and only at night.  Often through the streets, but most notably around the current Post Office across from the Grocery Store.

This orb is said to flicker and drift through the air, catching the attention of very few witnesses.  Maybe it wants to stay hidden.

Watcher for the Police

According to local lore, the Watcher is thought to be the spirit of a former constable.  A dedicated man who patrolled the town at night.

Giving deep meaning to the colour blue, a symbolic representation of police (such as, “boys in blue”).

Who is the Watcher?

No historic figure is confirmed to be the town spirit.  However, through research it seems there was no Chief Constable more respected in Niagara-on-the-Lake history than Robert Reid.

Reid started as a fireman serving from 1872 until his death in 1936.  Rising to the Chief of the Fire Brigade for 40 years.

Also appointed Chief Constable of the Police.  Leading to many accomplishments at the later part of his life until he retired from the stressful job in 1912.

Then for 25 years he served as Superintendent of the Niagara Camp Properties located inside the destroyed Fort George.  This was before the rebuild in the 1930s.  Meaning he lived in a house on the grounds ravaged by the War of 1812.

That’s where he’d die from “illness” in March of 1936.

From fire to crime, Robert Reid’s lifelong dedication to the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake makes him an ideal candidate for the Watcher.

It Can’t be Caught

What makes the Watcher intriguing is no one has ever been able to follow it.  Or even catch a clear glimpse.

Those who have witnessed it describe a brief flash of blue light vanishing into the darkness of night on Queen Street.  Leaving them with a feeling of being watched.

But many locals believe the Watcher is protective.  Guarding the town while the resident’s sleep.

It must be working!  Because despite the large crowds during the main season, the town knows much peace. The story of the Watcher has been passed down through generations.  Continuing to be a part of the ghostly charm of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
